Veronika Vera Bartakovic

Rođena:18.10.1922. (Kostelj, Hrvatska)

Preminula:19.05.2024. (Burnaby, Britanska Kolumbija, Kanada)

Dob: 101

Veronika was born on October 18, 1922 in Kostelj, Grizane, Croatia, and immigrated to Canada with her family in 1938, first to Trail B.C. then to Vancouver, and finally to North Burnaby.

She is predeceased by Peter, her husband of 52 years; parents Thomas and Maria; her brother Slavo (Angelica), sisters Dana (Miko), Katherine (John); and nephew Stanley.

She leaves behind her son Peter and daughter Joyce (Edward); grandsons Christopher, Clarke (Samantha), Scott and Kirk; nephew Jerry and family; and Stanley’s family. On the Bartakovic side of the family in Ontario, she is predeceased by her parents-in-law Sandor and Barbara, sister-in-law Kay (Charlie), brother-in-law Mark (Barbara), nephew-in-law Chris. She is survived by her nephew Charles Chuck (Daria); nieces Pat, Karen (Jack), Cynthia (Graham), and their respective families.

She loved and welcomed spending time with her family, thoroughly enjoyed her grandsons, and was always a kind, caring and thoughtful Mom and Gramma. She loved to engage in conversation, and have a good laugh. We’ll always remember her doubling over in hilarious and contagious laughter, that often brought her to tears! She was the one person you could count on for good advice, to confide in, to share a laugh and memories with. She had a very quick mind and strong resolve, and even through difficult times led her life with kindness and grace.

She was resourceful and hardworking from an early age. In Croatia, she picked asparagus from the family garden to sell to the hotels in Crikvenica, worked the pie counter at the White Lunch in Vancouver, became a seamstress and sewed uniforms for the Canadian Armed Forces during the war. One of her proudest moments was becoming co-owner and operator of MacKinnon’s Bakery on South Granville St. for many years. Here she fulfilled many roles as baker, cake decorator, store clerk, delivery person, bookkeeper, chief cook and bottle washer.

We’d like to thank Dr. Kenneth Cho for his many years of excellent care and support to Mom and family. Mom always said she was able to live a long life due to his care. Though her stay at Holyrood Manor was very short, we are grateful to the staff and doctors for their kindness, compassion and good care.

While Veronika’s passing has left a void in our hearts and a huge hole in our family, her memory will forever be cherished and celebrated. She will be very deeply missed and lovingly remembered forever.

As per Veronika’s wishes, a private Catholic funeral will be held for her family at Ocean View Funeral Home.
