Vinko Mesic, born in Selo Gornja Kamenica, Križpolje, Croatia on January 6, 1934 has passed away peacefully at the age of 88 with family at his side at the West Coast General Hospital in Port Alberni, BC on November 12, 2022.
Vinko will be greatly missed by his family. Survived by his loving and devoted wife Milka of 55 years. Children Victor from Parksville, Jenny (Mark) Baxter of Victoria, Jackie (Stephen) Boudreau from Nova Scotia. Grandchildren Joshua, Jacob, James, Andrew, Johathan, Aleka, Eviny and sister Jelka Mesic and many nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by his parents Vid and Jelka, brothers Pave (Zora), Milan (Mica) in Canada and Slavko, Manda and Maria in Croatia.
Vinko was a husband, father, grandfather (Dida), uncle, great uncle and great great uncle. He will always be remembered for being kind, caring and always willing to help family and friends.
During his younger years, Vinko tried to escape Yugoslavia twice after WWII and was caught and returned to Yugoslavia both times. On his third attempt, with the help of stranger, he made it across the border into Italy, then eventually to France. While in France, he was sponsored by his brother Milan in Port Alberni, and was brought to Canada in 1963 to begin a better life. In 1967, Vinko brought his childhood sweetheart, Milka to Canada from Croatia. They were married on April 15, 1967 in Port Alberni, BC.
Vinko worked at the Alberni Plywood Mill for nearly 30 years before retiring in 1991. After retirement, he enjoyed gardening and spending time with Milka and his cherished grandchildren.
