Virginia Vukasovich was born August 23, 1931 and passed away May 7, 2021 in her home surrounded by family.
She was born in Weirton, West Virginia to Anton and Gabrijela Buksa, two hard working parents who had immigrated from Croatia. At the age of 14 her family moved from Brooklyn, New York and settled in Watsonville on a small ranch and became apple growers.
Virginia graduated from Watsonville High School in 1950 and worked various jobs before marrying John Vukasovich aka "Boogie". They started a farming partnership with Martin Colendich known as C & V Vegetable Farms. Mom enjoyed the challenge of learning every aspect of running the office, doing payroll by hand and becoming an early adopter of computers. She worked until 70!
Mom loved her family and had a natural way with babies. To her grandchildren, she was known as "Nonnie" and enjoyed spoiling them.
Virginia attended Valley Catholic Church, faithfully meeting her friends every week for services and dinner afterwards. She also volunteered her time to the church and hospital.
As a member of the Slavic American Cultural Organization (SACO) and the Croatian Fraternal Union, she proudly shared her Croatian culture and heritage with friends and family. In her 20's, she greatly enjoyed dancing with the Kolo Dance Group.
Mom started getting ill early in 2020 and began staying with each of her four children, rotating houses every week. We all think she enjoyed the pampering!
She was predeceased by her husband, John Vukasovich, sister Marie Buksa, and two grandchildren, Max Chappell and Sabrina Vukasovich. She is survived by her children Connie Vukasovich-Haines (George), Dianna Vukasovich-Hersch, Jeanne Vukasovich, Martin Vukasovich, brothers Mario Buksa and Anthony Buksa, and grandchildren Ryan Felix (Sarah), Cleo Chappell, Bruce Vukasovich, Ava and Elle Hersch, and two great-grandchildren Liam and Noah Felix.
Our mother will be remembered as the strong matriarch of our family. She enjoyed everyone getting together for holidays with her strict orders that we "had to get along"! Now we cherish the memories we had together making jokes and dancing in the kitchen.
A private celebration of life will be held at a later date. Mehl's Colonial Chapel has been entrusted with the funeral arrangements.
