Walter Kosich passed away peacefully in his sleep in his home on July 26. Walter was born on September 28, 1921 in Richmond, California to parents Joseph and Angelina Kosich.
He was the youngest of four brothers (Joesph Jr., Frank and, John) who preceded him in death. His mother died when he was three years old. Early life was a struggle as the boys spent time living in St. Vincent's Boy's Home due to financial hardship.
Walter graduated from Richmond High School and always enjoyed attending their reunions.
Walter married Eleanor Cinko in 1942. They were childhood friends and lived on the same block. He served in the United States Army during World War Two and is remembered by a plaque in the city of Indian Wells, California. After attending Business School in Connecticut, he and Eleanor started Kosich Insurance Agency in 1946. The original location was in Richmond. The business is still operating today in Lafayette under the guidance of son Kenneth and grandson Gregory.
Walter and Eleanor were married for 52 years and enjoyed many good family times at their summer home in Clear Lake. They travelled extensively and later bought a home in Indian Wells where he loved to spend time. He wanted to return there up until his final days.
Family and friends shared many enjoyable moments while Walter played his beloved accordion which he had played since childhood. He was even hired to play on a Portuguese radio station at one time in his youth.
After Eleanor's passing in 1994 Walter met Bette Wolfslau. They spent 26 happy years together in their Danville home. Walter and Bette enjoyed traveling and spending time with friends and family.
Walter is survived by his two sons Walter Randy (Candice) and Kenneth (Patricia) as well as three grandchildren Melissa Reis (Matt), R. J. , and Gregory (Angelina) as well as six great grandchildren (all boys) Nicholas, Joseph, Andrew, Jackson, Thomas, and Brady. Additionally, Walter is survived by stepchildren John Monaghan, Deena Scarlett (Scott), and Kevin Monaghan ( Kathleen) along with step grandchildren Ella Scarlett and Savannah Scarlett.
Walter was a proud man who loved his Croatian heritage. He never missed an opportunity to cheer "Zivjeli!" before meals. Walter will be remembered for his fun loving, energetic, and joyful spirit.
The family is deeply appreciative of the wonderful care from all the caregivers. In lieu of flowers the family would like donations sent to Croatian Scholarship Fund P.O. Box 290 San Ramon, Calif. 94583.
Services will be held on Friday, August 6, 2021, 11am at St. Perpetua's Church in Lafayette, CA.
