As a young child during WWII, growing up was not easy. At 16 she left the family farm to enrol at a seamstress school in Croatia’s capital, Zagreb. As a young lady living in the city, she looked most forward to Saturday nights, doing her hair and attending the local dance, where she met her husband Juraj (George).
They left Croatia for Paris, France in search of a better life, where they lived and worked side by side for 18 months. Leaving Paris they made their way to Canada, calling Vancouver home. Zora had several jobs, eventually using her seamstress skills to work alongside dad at their Custom Tailor Shop.
She has two daughters, Diana (Thomas) and Irene (Ken) and four grandchildren; Robert, Drew, Katharine, and Meghan. Mama/Baka was generous with us all. She kept us laughing with her winks, her sense of humour, and her not so perfect English that we all found so endearing. Hard work and common sense were her strongest traits.
"Days off" were spent tending to her vegetable and flower gardens. Her clotheslines were full and tablecloths always ironed. Mom was a fantastic cook and baker, she loved park walks, visiting and entertaining friends and family.
We enjoyed many family vacations to Croatia, Hawaii, Mexico and Penticton summers. Mom and dad embraced retirement, finally enjoying a slower pace, travelling, and spending time in their dream home. Their retirement was cut short when dad battled cancer and passed away in 2007. Mom was lost and lonely after losing her husband.
Unfortunately, dementia crept in during the last 5 years of Moms' life. She was well cared for by the many kind and compassionate caregivers and staff at Chartwell Langley Gardens, whom we greatly appreciate.
Mom and dad are finally together and dancing once again. We were lucky she was ours.
