Zvonimir Josipovic, affectionately known as “Braco” to his family and close friends, passed away peacefully surrounded by his wife Roza and two children after a lengthy and difficult illness.
Born in Zagreb in what is now Croatia in the aftermath of the second world war, Zvonimir made the best of a very difficult start in life. The challenges of those initial years shaped his approach for the better days that followed. He emigrated to Canada in August, 1967 using an approach torn from the pages of a spy novel to escape, landing in Toronto, where he was met by an extended family that had fled a few years earlier.
Zvonimir quickly settled into his new home-country and met his beloved Roza at a church dance, at what would become the family’s lifelong parish. Our Lady Queen of Croatia was not simply a church to Zvonimir but, a second home. The two were wed soon afterward and children Eric and Nicole followed shortly. Driven by an entrepreneurial spirit, Zvonimir went on to establish his own business, Graphos Printing, which he ran with Roza until their retirement. The business was often a hub of charitable, social and cultural activity for the Croatian ex-pat community in the Golden Horseshoe.
Zvonimir spent his life fulfilling as many roles as he could: loyal husband, devoted father, parishioner, patriot, amateur photographer, dangerously amateur winemaker, sportsman, entrepreneur, gardener, handyman, storyteller, keeper of the fireplace, traveller and perhaps most importantly, “Dida” to his three cherished grandchildren.
Zvonimir is survived by his wife of 56 years, Roza, sister Mirjana (late Darko), son Eric (Carolyn) daughter Nicole (Dan) and grandchildren Neven, Grace and Daniel, along with nieces, a nephew, dearest friends and family members. He will be remembered fondly, missed sorely and loved forever.
