Born on March 26, 1936, in Brebrovac - Jastrebarsko, Croatia, Zvonko was the youngest of eight children born to Zvonimir and Ljubica. His early years were marked by resilience as he became independent at a young age after losing both parents and grandparents by the time he was just 11 years old. Despite these hardships, he excelled academically, particularly in economics, and was offered an administrative position at a prominent company in Zagreb. However, at the age of 26, he chose a different path-immigrating to the United States with his wife, Bozica Mahecic (Bobbie Tarbunas), in pursuit of a better life for their family.
Zvonko built a successful career as a talented machine builder in the automotive industry. His expertise was widely recognized, earning him offers from foreign companies eager for his skills. Later in life, he met Charlotte Lodico, with whom he shared 40 wonderful years. Together, they ran a successful retail boutique and attended numerous trade shows. Their specialty was handmade fine art beaded jewelry, which they designed and crafted together with great passion.
A man of many talents and interests, Zvonko traveled extensively throughout his life, including frequent visits to his homeland. He cherished deep philosophical conversations with his nephews Dr. Prof. Fr. Josip Baloban and Dr. Prof. Fr. Stjepan Baloban-both esteemed university professors, authors, and priests in Zagreb.
Zvonko found immense joy in hosting gatherings for friends and his large blended family. He was known for preparing elaborate feasts featuring fabulous dishes, appetizers, desserts, and always a well-stocked bar. His specialty was roasting lamb and pork on the spit as well as preparing kotlovina-a skill he perfected by designing and creating his own rotisserie mechanism and pan for these traditional meals. His warmth and hospitality made everyone feel connected and valued.
Those who knew Zvonko will remember him for his gentle nature, generosity, tireless work ethic, quick-witted humor, and unmistakable laugh that often accompanied his signature dance-and-clap-a joyful expression of his love for life and those around him.
